Research Project RecovREE

Development of Innovative Waste-to-Value Technologies for Sustainable Rare Earth Recycling and High-Value Magnet Recycling (RecovREE)

(Apr 2026 – May 2029)

The project brings together research institutions and industrial partners to develop advanced technologies for the sustainable recycling of rare earth elements and the reuse of magnetic materials. The consortium is developing innovative chemical extraction processes, magnet production and recycling technologies, AI-based magnet classification systems, as well as digital and XR solutions for process optimisation.

The objective of the project is to develop and validate innovative technological, process, and organisational solutions that will enable the efficient recovery and reuse of critical raw materials and support the development of prototypes up to Technology Readiness Level 6
(TRL 6). By the end of the project, at least five innovations, six process solutions, and five technological solutions ready for industrial implementation will be developed.

Program duration: 1 April 2026 – 31 May 2029

Total project value: 4,999,305.75 EUR

Amount of co-financing: 259,230.30 EUR

Amount of co-financing from INEA: 605,188.00 EUR

Funded by: The Slovenian Research and Innovation Agency (ARIS) under the public call Support for the Implementation of Research and Development Programmes (TRL 3–6).

The project is coordinated by the Jožef Stefan Institute and includes the following partners: ZAG, University of Ljubljana – Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering (UL NTF), Rudolfovo Science and Technology Centre, MAGNETI Ljubljana, ANALITICA, MATRIS, ISKRA PIO, Surovina, CINKARNA Celje, and INEA.
