Research Project MAMA-MEA

Horizon 2020: MAMA-MEA – Mass Manufacture of Membrane Electrode Assemblies (MEAs) using high speed deposition processes

(Jan 2018 – Jun 2021)

The push for the project is growing requirement of catalyst coated membranes (CCM), which will require manufacturing change in terms of costs and capacity in the next decade. The aim is to develop innovative concept of additive layer manufacturing (ALM) process for the edge sealed CCMs and to increase competitiveness of European fuel cell industry. The plans are to increase manufacturing rate of over 10 times, key material utilisation to 99 %, product quality and yield to 95 %, and to reduce direct materials and manufacturing costs up to 58 %. The results of the projects are detailed specifications of integrated single continuous roll-to-roll ALM edge-sealed CCM production line with embedded quality control. Besides demonstration of the advancements and benefits achievable also possible production capability scaling above 50 MW (possibly 10 GW) annually in single production line in single shift will be demonstrated.

The MAMA-MEA project was officially kicked-off on the 7th and 8th February at the Technische Universität in Chemnitz (TUC). All the consortium partners and the Project officer attended the event. At the kick-off the next steps for the first period were discussed, as well as the final goals.

INEA will lead one of the work packages in which we will carry out industrial manufacturing process design for the large-scale production, and further establish and assess the quality control methods to detect defects during CCMs manufacture.

Consortium partners:

  • Technische Universität Chemnitz (TUC)
  • Universita Degli Studi di Modena e Reggio Emilia (UNIMORE)
  • Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der angewandten Forschung e.V. (Fraunhofer)
  • Johnson Matthey Fuel Cells Limited (JMFC)
  • System SpA
  • Nedstack Fuel Cell Technology B.V. (NedStack)
  • INEA d.o.o.

This project has received funding from the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen 2 Joint Undertaking under grant agreement No 779591. This Joint Undertaking receives support from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, Hydrogen Europe and Hydrogen Europe research.
